Am I Jeopardizing My Job Search?

Looking for a job in today’s economy is one of the hardest and scariest things to do. Thousands of people graduate from college every year armed to the teeth with the knowledge they just gained and have a great thirst for success and adventure. While many people try their hardest to be at their best when looking for work, sometimes it just doesn’t seem to work. This is often because they might be doing something wrong and they don’t even realize it. There are about three things that could sabotage your job hunt, and we bet they are not even what you think.

Your email address. Surely you remember the time when you were so happy cause you were finally allowed to create your own email address, and you’ve been wanting to use that name you created to personally distinguish you, but are you still using the same email address to look for work? Often times, this can be very off-putting for many employers. Sure, maybe it’s a cute name, but if it’s not professional, you will most likely get rejected. Preferably, just use your name (e.g. karl.santos@yahoo.com) You might also want to make a separate address to sort your personal emails from your job hunting emails.

A keen eye for details is also important in job hunting.

Your resume. If your resume is almost as long as a short story, your chances are not looking too good. The same applies if your resume is too short for anyone to see anything relevant in there. One thing you need to remember when making your resumes is that you must never beat around the bush. Say what job you want and why you are the perfect fit for it. Besides, recruiters don’t really have that much time to sit down and flip through the pages of your resume; they’ve got handfuls more to look at! Always remember to stay on point but stay professional.

Your contacts. Have you talked to a living, breathing person in the last week? You may spend so much time on the internet submitting resumes and looking for job openings but you also have to remember, the internet is not the one employing you. Have you tried speaking to your old friends who may know of good job openings you could be perfect for? Have you gotten in touch with your old officemates and see how they are doing? Connecting with people and knowing how to speak with them is essential in getting hired.

Sometimes we may be doing things wrong and we don’t realize it. If you’re still on the hunt for your dream job and things still aren’t working out. Take the time and stop to evaluate your approach on things. There could be a few changes you need to do, a few things you need to stop or a few things you need to start doing.
